Meta Tags Keywords and Description – Should I Use Them?

Meta Tags – Old School

Recently, I was lectured by an old school SEO expert on the subject of using meta tags. He insisted on the importance of the use of meta tag keywords for search engine optimization.

However, every article I have read, every discussion I have had with other experts and every test I have done in my custon SEO practice shows that meta tag keywords are simply not relevant anymore, at least for Google. The optimization tools that I use also confirm the same results.

Are Meta Tags Irrelevant?

Keywords in Your Website URL – Should an SEO Worry About It

Should you use your keywords in the URLs of your web pages? Do search engines look at the keywords that are included in the addresses of your web pages and do these keywords have an effect on the website SEO rankings ?

Link Building Takes Time (Inbound Links)

All good webmasters know what it takes to get better search engine rankings. You have to optimize your web pages and you have to get good inbound links (an inbound link is a link that points to your website or web page using specific text and does not have a link back. For example I am using this SEO Toronto link to point to Solution416 without them linking back to this blog).

If you want to get high quality links, you have to invest time and effort. You have to work continually on your links and your web page content. These two elements will allow you to outperform your competition in the search engines.

Natural- Acceptable Links For Google Ranking vs Bad Links

Sometime in the distant past, it was enough to get any and as many inbound links as possible to get high rankings on Google. The source of the links didn’t matter, only the number was important.

Today, that is no longer the case. Getting the right links is essential to getting listed on the first page of search engine results.

Normal, acceptable links that will increase your Google rankings

Natural links are links that are related to your website content. For example, if you have a website about Search engine optimization, a totally unrelated link from an acrylic painting website would look odd. The links that point to your website should be from related websites and from sources that would “normally” link to you. For example, it would seem normal for a blog that is dedicated to alternative therapy to link to your massage therapy website. The more related the link, the higher is the rank you will get.

Things to avoid when adding inbound links to your website

1. Do not  always link to the same page.

Most links go to the home page of a website. Overusing the home page link has two drawbacks:

1. Surfers who follow a link expect to be taken immediately to the relevant information. If they do not get what they need instantly, and have to navigate to it after landing on your home page, they will leave your website.

How to get top links to your website – Inbound links

Here are a few things you should do to get good links to your website. You should try to get as many as you can, but not all at once.

1. Create a link worthy website

If your website is only a collection of article links and affiliate links, then you cannot expect that other webmasters will link to your site. Create a website with good content. You should build pages whose sole purpose is to get inbound links. These could be “How to” articles, product review pages or “Top 10 Reasons to …” articles. The more educational and relevant your web pages are, the easier it is to get links to your site.

Get Better Ranking With Google SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Targeting several keywords on your website is crucial to get high rankings on Google. The more keywords that are related to a particular topic that can be found on your website, the more likely it is that Google will find your website relevant to that topic.

If you choose black hat SEO, search engines will treat you as a spammer. If you choose  ethical SEO, your website will get higher rankings.

Here are our recommendations for a better SEO:

Remove keyword repetition

Some inexperienced web designers gather all the keywords that they want to optimize for and place them on every page of the website. Their title tags and meta tags become extremely long.

Unfortunately for them, Google truncates the title and ignores anything after 10 keywords. They consider keyword stuffing spam, which puts the entire website at risk of being penalized and dumped into the sandbox. (You really do not want to be put in Google sandbox.)

Check if your web pages contain long keywords lists. If they do, remove them from all your pages. [Read more…]

Improve your sleeping habits – Avoid Insomnia

What can I do to improve my sleep habits?

Here are some things you can do to help you sleep better:

  • Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even if you didn’t sleep enough during the night. This will help train your body to sleep at night.
  • Do the same thing every night before going to bed to help your body get ready for sleep. You might try taking a warm bath, reading or doing some other relaxing activity every night before retiring. Soon you’ll connect these activities with sleeping, and they’ll help make you sleepy.

Russian Roulette Or Safe Website Design

In a discussion with a friend last week, she mentioned that she wanted to have a simple and safe website.

Her target clients are those with a higher-end income who could buy her luxury services.  Her definition of simple was disguising the real word, lowest possible cost. She also added she wanted to play it safe since she is just starting her business. She was going to ask a friend who has a hobby of web development to design her new high-end website.

Is designing a low cost website considered a safe way to build your high end business?

To have a successful website you need to have a:

Google Sandbox Can SEO Help?

Google’s sandbox is a filter that Google created years ago to fight spam. If you have a new website or if you made major changes on your website, then Google’s sandbox filter might be the reason why your website’s rankings have dropped.

How can I find out if my website is in the sandbox?

If the following criteria apply to your website, it is likely it is in Google’s sandbox:

  1. Your website cannot be found if you search for the exact title tag.
  2. Your domain is less than 2 years old or you just made major changes to your website content.
  3. Your website had good rankings and now it dropped off 30 plus positions.
  4. Your website has good rankings in Yahoo and MSN/Live but not in Google.
  5. You are using gray or black hat optimization techniques on your website.
